Gliese

“Num universo cujo tamanho está para além da imaginação humana, onde o nosso mundo flutua como um grão de poeira no vazio da noite, os homens cresceram inconcebivelmente sós.” [1]. O ser humano, desde há muito que se questiona sobre a sua existência no universo. Será que estamos sozinhos no universo ou existem muitas outras Terras espalhadas pelo cosmos? Já foram descobertos mais de 200 planetas extra-solares, mas sem sinais de vida extraterrestre até ao momento. E sempre que surge a notícia da descoberta de mais um planeta, os nossos olhos viram-se para o céu na esperança de que esse tal planeta habitado apareça. Em Abril de 2007 foi anunciada a descoberta do Planeta Gliese (Gliese 581C) que orbita a estrela anã vermelha (Gliese 581) na constelação de Libra. Este planeta descoberto por astrónomos europeus fica a 20,5 anos-luz da Terra, tem um diâmetro 50% maior que a Terra e com uma gravidade 1,6 superior ao nosso planeta. Os cientistas acreditam que este planeta tem condições para abrigar vida, chegando mesmo ao ponto de no passado dia 9 de Outubro alguns cientistas terem enviado através do radiotelescópio situado na cidade de Evpatoria (Ucrânia) mensagens com fotos, desenhos e mensagens de texto. Percorrendo o universo à velocidade da luz, as mensagens vão chegar ao planeta Gliese no ano 2029. Se por acaso por lá existir vida inteligente, com capacidade de entender as nossas mensagens, e se nos enviarem uma mensagem de volta, obteremos uma resposta em 2049! Ficaremos então a aguardar por notícias de um outro mundo!!

Human beings have long questioned their existence in the universe. Are we alone in the universe, or are there many other Earths scattered throughout the cosmos? More than 200 extrasolar planets have already been discovered, but with no signs of extraterrestrial life so far. And whenever news breaks about the discovery of yet another planet, our eyes turn to the sky in the hope that such an inhabited planet will appear. In April 2007, the discovery of Planet Gliese (Gliese 581c), which orbits the red dwarf star Gliese 581 in the constellation Libra, was announced. Discovered by European astronomers, this planet is 20.5 light-years from Earth, has a diameter 50% larger than Earth's, and has a gravitational pull 1.6 times that of our planet. Scientists believe this planet has the conditions to harbour life, going so far that on October 9th, some scientists used the radio telescope located in the city of Yevpatoria (Ukraine) to send messages containing photos, drawings, and text. Traveling through the universe at the speed of light, these messages will reach planet Gliese in the year 2029. If by any chance intelligent life exists there with the capability to understand our messages, and if they send a reply back, we will receive a response in 2049! So, we shall wait for news from another world!!
